Grooved 6 Board Burr #1

Grooved 6 Board Burr #1

This little monster requires 22 moves to take the first piece apart from the assembled shape. There are several pins sticking out inside of the pieces and the pins travel along the grooves while the puzzle is being assembled or disassembled. The difficulty of the puzzle is extreme and finding a unique solution among 4246 piece assemblies is very challenging.

When Juno designed the first 6 Board Burr in 1990 he thought that the puzzle was too difficult even to the serious puzzle lovers. Now have a look at the 6 Board Burr page of Puzzle will be played website, there are dozens of 6 Board Burr puzzles and many of them require quite a lot of moves to assemble and disassemble. These extreme level puzzles seem to be accepted by serious puzzle lovers even though the puzzles are too difficult for human beings. Juno started designing a kind of 6 Board Burr that requires relatively higher moves to disassemble the first piece.

Acknowledging good results of using the CNC router to cut the shape of the puzzle pieces when Yukari, his wife, produced several miniature puzzles, Juno thought the shape of this puzzle should also be cut by the CNC router. If grooves are engraved on the surface of the pieces, that can be done by the CNC router at the same time as well. This was the beginning of the idea of producing Grooved 6 Board Burr.

Unlike some of his former puzzles, the grooves are not totally hidden inside. You can also indicate the position of the dowel pins that move along the grooves thanks to the circular spots that can be seen from outside.

The main part of the pieces is made with American Cherry and that has a very smooth surface. The ends of each piece are reinforced by the darker timber Jarrah to prevent cracks following the grain. It also provides a nice contrast and makes the puzzle look good.

The puzzle is sold assembled. The solution to this puzzle will be supplied upon request by Burr Tools file format.
