Framed Burr Box

Framed Burr Box

Juno had been thinking that it would be good to add puzzle boxes to our product line. Many puzzle lovers think that he has a good reputation for designing burr puzzles. So, as the originator of the framed burr, he decided to include a six piece framed burr into a puzzle box.

His original versions of framed burrs, designed in 1991, require 14 moves to take the first piece apart. Thanks to the aid of sophisticated computer programs, the necessary moves for the first piece of the Framed Burr Box increased to 39. It is extremely difficult to find the unique solution of the puzzle among 647 possible assemblies.

There are three challenges to the puzzle. First, removing all six sticks means you complete the framed burr section of the puzzle but you still cannot access the inside of the box. The second challenge is to open the actual lid. The last challenge is to completely disassemble the box going through non-straightforward steps. Of course, you need to reassemble the puzzle if you are not happy to leave the scattered timber parts.

Juno desired to have a spacious internal room of the puzzle box. He carefully modified and adjusted each measurement of the puzzle so as not to spoil the trick of the puzzle, and made the box part large enough to take a 5x5x5 Rubik's cube.

Some of the crucial production work had to be done with a CNC router, which took an average of three hours per puzzle. He occasionally mowed the lawn while the CNC router was doing the actual work. The CNC router was especially handy when he needed to make diagonal holes to reinforce the intersections of the post pieces with bamboo skewers.

The solution to this puzzle will be supplied upon request by Burr Tools file format.
