Dark Matter Burr

Dark Matter Burr

Dark Matter Burr requires 18 moves to remove the first piece from its completed state. While this might be relatively easy for those accustomed to high-level burr puzzles, many people might find it confusing due to the numerous possible pieces that can be moved during the disassembly and reassembly process.

To prevent pieces from moving on their own due to slight force or gravity when the puzzle is completed, we have embedded magnets in the underside of each piece. To ensure the shine of the magnets isn't too noticeable against the dark color of the pieces, we mixed a small amount of sawdust into the epoxy used to secure the magnets.

When we visited a timber yard, we asked the shop staff if they had any very dark-colored timber. They suggested thermally modified Kwila, which has a black color similar to Ebony or Wenge. The thermal modification process increases the dimensional stability and strength of the timber, making it an ideal material for mechanical puzzles. Therefore, we decided to use it in our products. For the inner layers of our original plywood, we used dark-colored Koto. Typically, Koto is white, but some pieces have a darker color. We decided to use the Koto that we had set aside previously because it was too dark for the exterior of Slammed Car when we produced it.

For the base to display the puzzle, we used Jarrah and the commonly colored Koto. After almost finishing the burr's processing, we realized there was no place to add the branding. So, we decided to produced the base and put the branding on the underside.

Thermally modified Kwila is a very interesting timber, but it has a common characteristic of being brittle like many hard woods. As a result, there may be small chips, especially on the underside of the pieces, during CNC processing. Please be aware that there may be such occurrences in the puzzle you receive.

The solution to this puzzle will be supplied upon request by Burr Tools file format. We provide the puzzle solution as a responsibility to those who purchase our puzzles. Therefore, we kindly ask that you refrain from distributing it to third parties.
